Dolphin Adventure boats behave like biological platforms where our guides collect data on a daily basis. This data is provided to different organizations like Marine Biology Laboratory in the University of Seville, and other institutions to measure the state of conservation status of our population.

To measure the population abundance we use the Photo ID technique.

 

 

What is Photo ID?

 

Dolphins are recognizable by their dorsal fins. The fins are different in colour and shape, as well as different nicks produced by parasites, inter/intra specific interactions and fishing lines, so we can classify and calculate dolphins population numbers. Photo ID is the most non-invasive technique known to study dolphin abundance. In each trip we take photos so we can calculate abundance and frequency of each dolphin present in the bay.

 

 

Every year due to our research we are able to plot the dolphins positions in maps. We use tools such as Geographical information systems to produce maps like this, allowing us to create reports, and patterns.

Also photo ID helps us to track injured dolphins and control the evolution of their healing process.

At the moment we are working on two different articles, to provide information to authorities about cuts, lacerations produced by propeller strikes, fishing nets and lines and some somatic diseases.

All the information we gather is scientifically published and this is the information that we provide for our customers, making the dolphin watching experience real and educational, so you can learn about our local population and at the same time were helping towards their conservation
