ALWAYS approach cetaceans SLOWLY, ideally at 4knots speed.

 

ALWAYS approach cetaceans from the side, NEVER from behind or head on.

 

Keep the vessel at a slow, NO WAKE speed and maintain a steady and constant direction where possible. This makes the animals feel more secure which increases the chances of a close encounter.

 

NEVER REVERSE around the dolphins.

 

NEVER CROSS the path of a cetacean or a group of cetaceans in an attempt to force them in to a close encounter situation.

Also do not try to anticipate their movements by putting the vessel ahead of them. Both of these actions will result in the animals making manoeuvres to avoid the vessel.

 

NEVER SPLIT a pod or group of Cetaceans.

Dolphins and whales should never feel encircled. Be especially aware and careful when in the presence of mothers and calves, keeping a safe distance with minimum engine use.

 

NEVER spend more than 20 minutes with cetaceans, take the vessel to look for a different pod.

There may be times when you moved off and the animals chose to stay with the vessel, this is acceptable.

 

NEVER attempt to FEED cetaceans, do not permit passengers to do this either.

 

Try to ENCOURAGE passengers to make as little noise as possible.

 

Be AWARE of possible signs of distress.

Leave the area at very low speed the moment that you notice any signs of distress.
